This gets you out of the way of heavy-hitting attacks without being damaged. Blink is a limited resource that lets you move to any location near you without taking up a turn. The grid-like movements can feel prohibiting, but this is tackled by introducing a mechanic called Blink. Time only moves when you do, but sometimes it is better to wait and let the enemies approach. Because you are on a grid you can’t move diagonally, so it’s best suited to play by using the good old D-pad rather than the left control stick. Instead of free movement, you move on a grid-like pattern, taking a page out of Crypt of the Necrodancer, will remaining really different. Here is where the storytelling end and you will be booted straight up in the meat and bones of the game. Battle your way through your nightmares in the procedurally generated dungeons that are set in her own mind. You as Elle are tasked to save both the realm of Nightmares as the world you’re from by defeating Duke Vlad. The cause of all this is a human who goes by the name of Duke Vlad, with his heart filled with greed. Nightmares have seemed to have brought disasters and chaos into the world which in terms caused the world to be on the brink of destruction. You team up with Crown who claims to be the “Guardian of Nightmares”, who grants you your special powers. You play as Elle, a girl who entered the Realm of Nightmares. The game starts off with a beautifully animated introduction to the story. Crown Trick is another beautiful game in the genre that has something unique to bring to the table as well. Some being rhythm-based, while others being more hack & slash. All offering a different experience within the genre. It’s a great title to be able to pick up and have a play through to pass time and thanks to the random levels and loot it seems fresh each time.The Nintendo Switch is home to many Roguelike and Roguelite games of amazing quality. I was taken in by the game from the get go… the visuals are lovely an playful and the gameplay is challenging but not frustrating (no doubt some will find it “too easy”, but for me it was a good balance). When the inevitable happens and you take damage (or run out of magic) you can use a potion to revive, it will revive both health and magic… but you can only carry so many with you, so when you use it becomes very influential to your chance of survival in the long run, not just the short run. Once you defeat a boss, they become part of your pool of characters you can call on to help you in a run, each one has it’s own set of abilities and which one will work best for a given run can vary. You have one primary weapon then some bonus tools such as your familiar/s. Thanks to your (limited) blink ability you can flash to another portion of the room to avoid these, but you only have a few uses before you will have to find another method of escape. Some enemies will use attacks that take a while to fire, in these cases you will get warning squares saying when and when those attacks will hit. This means you have a chance to look at the lay of the room and make some tactical decisions. In this realm your best asset is the fact that when combat starts, enemies only move when you move. The nightmare realm is where the action is (which is why you fall asleep to attempt a run). Release them from their captors and they will set up their little work/shops in your base where you can get different provisions to tackle your enemies. That base of operations slowly gets more stocked as you come across people who need saving during your travels. Permadeath is in effect, but you don’t loose everything, you simply “awaken” in your base of operations where you can look at reconfiguring yourself for your next attempt. The game falls into the Rouge-like category with random levels and random loot presenting the lure to replay. You’d have some sort of idea of what Crown Trick is like. If Diablo was restyled with inspiration from Saturday morning cartoons and took the demonic monsters and made them almost “cute”… though still potentially deadly.
